The day I sat down and penned these words was the
2004 version of Forget-Me-Not Day
(for real!). It was also the 53rd anniversary of the day when I
was born on my great-grandma's (Berta Mary) 78th birthday.
My Mom spent most of
her growing-up years with her paternal grandparents, Edgar and
Berta Mary (Sharp) Henry. Berta Mary was about 5 years of age when her
own mother, Nellie, died c. 1878.
Berta grew up to marry and raise a family of
her own. One of her sons was Robert E. Henry, born in Milam
County, Texas in 1905. He cowboyed in West
Texas before joining the Navy and heading for the Boston
Shipyards.
There Robert met and married a young Maine beauty named
Elizabeth. They soon had a son, and shortly thereafter were
expecting another youngun. That baby was my Mom. Elizabeth died at
the young age of 19, and a mere three days after my Mom was born
in 1932.
By the time Mom was ready for school, she was back
in Texas living with her paternal grandparents. Her father had
remarried while still in Lynn, and had another daughter, Carole.
Two more girls would follow . . . Elaine and Susan.
Mom graduated from high school in Rockdale where
she was a popular cheerleader. She soon married one of the town's
best looking young men, and one year and one month later to the
day I came along.
I am Vickie, and I live in Dallas, Texas.
